Victor Wembanyama Ejected in Game 4 After Elbowing Naz Reid
Victor Wembanyama received the first ejection of his NBA career during Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals between the San Antonio Spurs and the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday night.
The incident happened early in the second quarter. Wembanyama swung his elbow while fighting through pressure after grabbing a rebound. The elbow struck Timberwolves forward Naz Reid in the jaw and neck area.
Officials immediately called an offensive foul. After reviewing the play, referee Zach Zarba upgraded the call to a Flagrant 2 foul for excessive contact above the neck. The ruling triggered an automatic ejection.
Wembanyama looked surprised by the decision. He reportedly asked teammate Harrison Barnes what the ruling meant before leaving the court.
Before the ejection, Wembanyama recorded four points, four rebounds, and three fouls in 13 minutes.
According to ESPN Research, Wembanyama became the earliest All-Star ejected from a playoff game in the play-by-play era, which began in 1997-98.
Minnesota secured a 114-109 win and tied the series at 2-2. Game 5 will take place Tuesday in San Antonio.
A Flagrant 2 foul carries a minimum $2,000 fine. The NBA could also issue additional discipline after reviewing the incident.
