The University of North Carolina has fired head coach Hubert Davis following a disappointing early exit in the NCAA Tournament.
The decision came just days after the Tar Heels suffered a stunning first-round loss to VCU Rams men’s basketball. North Carolina blew a 19-point second-half lead and lost 82-78 in overtime. It marked one of the biggest collapses in recent tournament history.
University Confirms Leadership Change
In an official statement, the university described the move as a “change in leadership.” However, Davis later confirmed on social media that he was let go.
Despite the firing, the school will honor the remaining $5.3 million on his contract.
Athletic director Bubba Cunningham and incoming AD Steve Newmark recommended the move. Chancellor Lee Roberts approved the decision.
Late-Season Struggles Sealed His Fate
North Carolina finished the season 24-9. The team showed promise early, including a key win over Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball to reach 19-4.
However, the Tar Heels struggled down the stretch, going just 5-5 in their final games. Injuries to star player Caleb Wilson also hurt the team’s momentum.
This marks the second straight year North Carolina exited the NCAA Tournament in the first round.
Mixed Results During Davis’ Tenure
Davis took over in 2021 after Hall of Fame coach Roy Williams retired.
His tenure included both highs and lows:
- 2022: Led UNC to the national championship game, defeating Mike Krzyzewski’s Duke team in the Final Four
- 2023: Preseason No. 1 team but missed the NCAA Tournament entirely
- 2024: Won the ACC regular-season title and earned a No. 1 seed
Over five seasons, Davis compiled a 125-54 record, with a 69.8% winning percentage.
A Historic Program Faces Uncertainty
Davis’ departure creates a major opening at one of college basketball’s most prestigious programs.
North Carolina has traditionally hired from within its “Carolina family.” Previous coaches like Dean Smith, Roy Williams, and Davis all had deep ties to the school.
Now, the university may consider looking outside that tradition for the first time in decades.
What’s Next for Hubert Davis?
In his statement, Davis expressed gratitude and optimism about his future.
He said coaching at North Carolina was a blessing and added that he hopes to return to coaching soon.
