Purdue Boilermakers men’s basketball escaped with a dramatic 79-77 win over Texas Longhorns men’s basketball in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
The game featured 10 ties and 16 lead changes, highlighting its intensity. With just 11.9 seconds left, Dailyn Swain converted a three-point play to tie the game at 77.
However, Purdue responded in the final moments. Braden Smith controlled the ball after a timeout. His missed shot led to a clutch tip-in by Trey Kaufman-Renn with only 0.7 seconds remaining, sealing the win.
Kaufman-Renn finished with 20 points and eight rebounds. Meanwhile, Fletcher Loyer added 18 points, including four three-pointers. Smith contributed 16 points and five assists.
Texas shot an impressive 52% from the field, but it was not enough. Tramon Mark led the Longhorns with 29 points despite playing through injury. His performance marked the most points by a Texas player in the tournament since Kevin Durant scored 30 in 2007.
Arizona Crushes Arkansas in Offensive Showcase
In another Sweet 16 matchup, Arizona Wildcats men’s basketball dominated Arkansas Razorbacks men’s basketball 109-88.
Arizona displayed elite offensive depth. Six players scored at least 14 points, a first in NCAA Tournament history.
Brayden Burries led the way with 23 points. Freshmen Koa Peat and Ivan Kharchenkov added 21 and 15 points, respectively.
Arkansas star Darius Acuff Jr. scored 28 points. He finished the tournament with 88 total points in three games.
Tensions rose in the second half. Nick Pringle and head coach John Calipari received technical fouls. Billy Richmond was also ejected after a flagrant foul.
Arizona shot an incredible 64% from the field. Even Steve Kerr, head coach of the Golden State Warriors and a former Arizona player, would be impressed by their performance.
Iowa Upsets Nebraska to Reach Elite Eight
Iowa Hawkeyes men’s basketball rallied past Nebraska Cornhuskers men’s basketball 77-71 to secure a spot in the Elite Eight for the first time since 1987.
Iowa used a crucial 15-6 run late in the game. Bennett Stirtz scored 20 points, while Alvaro Folgueiras added 16.
The Hawkeyes trailed early but stayed composed. A three-pointer by Stirtz gave Iowa its first late lead. Another shot by Sage Tate extended the advantage and secured the win.
For Nebraska, Pryce Sandfort scored 25 points and made six three-pointers. However, the team struggled in the second half, shooting just 28%.
Illinois Shocks Houston with Defensive Masterclass
Illinois Fighting Illini men’s basketball defeated Houston Cougars men’s basketball 65-55 in a defensive battle.
Illinois limited Houston to 34% shooting for the game. A decisive 17-0 run in the second half sealed the upset.
David Mirkovic recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Keaton Wagler added 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Houston’s offense struggled throughout. Freshman Kingston Flemings led the team with 11 points but lacked support.
