Tommaso Ciampa officially made his AEW Dynamite debut on Wednesday night, marking his first appearance in All Elite Wrestling after his long run with WWE came to an end.
During the show, Ciampa answered Mark Briscoe’s TNT Championship Open Challenge, setting up his first AEW match. Ciampa is now scheduled to face Briscoe for the TNT Championship this Saturday at AEW Collision.
Ciampa previously hinted at his departure from WWE on January 21, when he posted on X that his contract was nearing its expiration.
The 40-year-old joined WWE in 2015, where he rose to prominence in NXT as one half of the popular tag team DIY alongside Johnny Gargano. The duo captured the NXT Tag Team Championships, while Ciampa also enjoyed major singles success as a two-time NXT Champion. After moving to the main roster on SmackDown, DIY continued their momentum by becoming two-time WWE Tag Team Champions.
Ciampa’s final WWE match took place on December 15, when he and Gargano lost to Carmelo Hayes and Ilja Dragunov.
Interestingly, Ciampa is no stranger to his first AEW opponent. Before signing with WWE, he faced Mark Briscoe multiple times during their shared time in Ring of Honor (ROH).
Briscoe, meanwhile, is looking to successfully defend the TNT Championship once again after retaining the title in a match against El Clon on Wednesday.
