Macclesfield FC have confirmed the death of forward Ethan McLeod, who died at the age of 21 following a car accident on the M1 motorway.
McLeod was travelling home on Tuesday night after playing in a National League North away match against Bedford Town. The accident occurred shortly after the game and has deeply affected the football community.
Ethan McLeod’s Football Journey
Ethan McLeod began his career at Wolverhampton Wanderers, joining the academy at just seven years old. He later signed professional terms with the club before leaving in September 2024.
During the 2024/25 season, McLeod played for Rushall Olympic and Stourbridge. He later joined Macclesfield FC, where he quickly earned respect within the first-team squad.
Macclesfield FC Pays Tribute
Macclesfield FC released an emotional statement following the news.
“Ethan was a hugely talented and well-respected member of our squad. He brought energy, professionalism and positivity to everything he did.”
The club praised his work ethic and personality, both on and off the pitch. It added that his loss has devastated everyone connected to the club. Macclesfield also sent its deepest condolences to McLeod’s family and friends.
Wolves and Former Clubs Remember McLeod
Wolves announced they will hold a minute’s silence before their Premier League match against Brentford on Saturday.
In a statement, the club said:
“We are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Ethan McLeod. He joined our academy at seven and progressed to professional level.”
Wolves also confirmed that Ethan’s younger brother, Conor McLeod, currently plays for the Under-21s. The club will support him and his family during this difficult time.
Former club Rushall Olympic also shared a tribute. The club highlighted McLeod’s winning penalty against Peterborough Sports in the FA Cup last season. That moment secured his place in the club’s history.
