Dominican Republic Defeats Israel 10–1 at World Baseball Classic, Ending Hopes of Another Magical Run
Team Israel’s hopes for another magical run at the World Baseball Classic came to an end after a heavy 10–1 defeat against the Dominican Republic on Monday in Miami.
The loss marked Israel’s second defeat of the tournament, ensuring the team would not advance beyond the first round. This outcome contrasts sharply with the historic 2017 campaign when Israel went undefeated in pool play and reached the second round.
After the game, Israel manager Brad Ausmus admitted the result was difficult to accept.
“It’s never fun to get your butt kicked,” Ausmus said while speaking to reporters.
Dominican Republic Dominates Early
The Dominican Republic quickly took control of the game with an explosive second inning. Israel’s starting pitcher Ryan Prager ran into trouble after walking the bases loaded with one out. Shortstop Geraldo Perdomo then drew another walk to force in the first run before superstar Fernando Tatis Jr. delivered the biggest blow of the game.
Tatis Jr. launched a grand slam to right field, putting the Dominican Republic ahead 5–0 and setting the tone for the rest of the matchup. He later added two more RBIs in the seventh inning, finishing the game with six runs batted in.
Strong Pitching and Star Power
Dominican starter Brayan Bello dominated on the mound, retiring the first nine batters he faced and striking out the side in the third inning. Bello finished with five innings pitched, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out multiple hitters.
Israel’s only run came in the fourth inning when designated hitter Spencer Horwitz broke up the shutout with a solo home run. However, the Dominican lineup continued to add runs, including a solo homer from Oneil Cruz, extending their comfortable lead.
According to Ausmus, facing such a powerful lineup is one of the biggest challenges in international baseball.
“It’s obviously one of the best lineups in the world,” Ausmus said. “A guy like Juan Soto will make you pay if you miss your spot. Their weaknesses are very small, so executing pitches is the most important part.”
Israel’s Tournament Situation
With the defeat, Team Israel dropped to a 1–2 record in pool play. Despite the loss, the team secured qualification for the next World Baseball Classic thanks to its earlier victory over Nicaragua.
Israel will conclude its 2026 tournament schedule with a final game against the Netherlands. A victory in that matchup would double the team’s win total from the 2023 tournament.
Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic’s dominant performance reinforced its status as one of the strongest contenders in the tournament, featuring an all-Major League lineup that continues to impress fans in Miami.
